I promoted a local atheist group on Facebook. This is what happened.

A have a confession: I'm on Facebook quite a lot. I was mucking around the other day and saw that one of my buddies uses The Brockton Hub group quite a bit to network. I checked out what the purpose of the group is. Here is an excerpt from the "About" section.
The Brockton Hub (also known as “The Hub”) is a group designed to interconnect current and former citizens of Brockton, Massachusetts utilizing Facebook’s network. The group encourages citizens of Brockton to unite and reunite, communicate ideas, and conduct moderate debates on trending topics. Group members [coined “Hubster(s)”] have developed and included a comprehensive image database comprised of current, past, and historic photographs spanning over a century of Brockton history. Since the group's establishment, thousands of current and former citizens have become members.
The Brockton Hub continues to mold, shape, and grow into a stronger, vibrant, more distinctive entity.

Please treat one another with respect and dignity.
I decided to promote the local atheist group I belong to -- The Brockton MA Area Atheists. I'm from Brockton originally, and the post would communicate ideas.

So I decided to be as divisive and insulting as possible. Here is what I posted.

Now you can see how inflammatory that is, right?

I'm sure none of you will be surprised what happened next.
What follows are some of  my favorite comments from the thread.

I don't want to misrepresent that page or that community. As you can read from the entire (oh, I'm sure there's more being added even as I write) thread below there was an active debate going on between the different sides. My disruptive suggestion that the godless in a metropolitan area want to meet did bring out the archetypal internet types: THE GUY WHO LOVES ALL CAPS guy, the person who doesn't understand Hitler, etc.

Oh, one person did contact me, BTW. I don't know if that person will ever attend a meeting, but for something that took me two minutes to write it was well worth my time.

This is Purgatory.

Here is the thread.

What? You read to the end of the thread? Good for you!

My eyes glazed over, too.

  1. Wow, interesting friends. I too challenge religious beliefs on facebook. It's funny to watch them get their underwear in a twist. The latest is economic theory. I'm Kaynesian - so I support doubling the federal minimum wage. A former co-worker puts up the Austrian economic model. Ut si!

  2. Holy Golly! I can't even finish reading that string of comments. So much hate and bullshit... I admire how naive people can pretend to be when attempting to explain their hypocrisy.

I like your initiative. I really wished there was an atheist group in my town. I see my friends getting together in chruches and getting to know people who tink like them. I do miss that social aspect of religious groups.

  3. I read the first volley of comments, and then I started scrolling, and then....wow that's a lot of comments.
Too long, didn't read. You'd think that atheists were like anti-christs or something from they way the people commenting talked.

  4. Holy shit, don't know how i got through all of that but some of that stuff was pretty funny.Did you mention ghosts? ... I did... then you offended my beliefs. So me talking about ghosts offended you? ugghh noo.

Can you do this once a month and post results each time. That would be grand.

  5. I will admit that of course I did not read all of the comments. I did however read the first few, which were legitimate questions about what the purpose of the meeting is and what would be discussed. You never responded. If the thread then went overwhelmingly negative, it was most certainly your fault.

  6. Yep, about as I expected... especially in Massachusetts. People think the South is bad, but they've obviously never been to Brockton, West Bridgewater, or to South Boston.

  7. Hang in there, man.

  8. What a circlejerk. Sorry about your experience.

  9. Wow! I was considering coming out as an atheist on Facebook, but I think I'll stay anonymous a little while longer. You really find out who your friends are, don't you?

    Keep up the good work!

  11. There were more comments than I expected. You would think that forward thinking people back east would be forward thinking. I am always amazed that people don't know that some of their co-workers and friends, too, are atheist.

  13. What an absolute clusterfuck. Didn't read them all, it was too painful. I expect nothing better from Facebook, and am not surprised by how vehemently some cling to their deluded beliefs.

    1. Interesting note: I know one of the deluded from that thread. I don't think he remembers me though.

  15. No offense but if this is Brockton MA, you aren't dealing with the brightest people in the world..... at least it's not Haverhill

  16. Andrew I am one of the less inflammatory commentors on your thread. The fact that you posted this for shits and giggles is infuriating. I am Catholic and was actually intrigued by your post. Instead of providing an answer you hid behind your screen like the piece of shit you are.

    1. Hid behind his screen? What sort of paranoid delusion do you live in, man?

Did he murder anyone? Did he steal anything? Did he lie, or defraud? NO! He posted an announcement of a meeting! One announcement! Of one meeting! And nothing else!

Seriously, how can anybody think like this?

    2. Hiding behind a screen? Come on, he posted his actual name, he's very open about his life, he promotes his comedy on here, does stand up comedy as an atheist. If anyone is "hiding behind a screen", it's not him for sure.

  19. The best part about this is that you didn't say anything other than "Hi. I'm an atheist in this general locality. Are you an atheist in this general locality? Let's talk!"

    /waits 30 seconds

    Total shitshow!

  20. "Reading this thread I expected drama. I expected people who believe in God to clash with people who don't. I didn't expect the amount of disrespect I've seen here. I can respect someone who doesn't share my beliefs. I can not respect someone who calls God fake and a ghost just for insults. For you people I quote Jesus and pray "Forgive them for they know not what they do"."

    OR

"I can respect people that disagree with me on this subject unless they disagree with me. That I cannot abide!"
