A have a confession: I'm on Facebook quite a lot. I was mucking around the other day and saw that one of my buddies uses The Brockton Hub group quite a bit to network. I checked out what the purpose of the group is. Here is an excerpt from the "About" section.
The Brockton Hub (also known as “The Hub”) is a group designed to interconnect current and former citizens of Brockton, Massachusetts utilizing Facebook’s network. The group encourages citizens of Brockton to unite and reunite, communicate ideas, and conduct moderate debates on trending topics. Group members [coined “Hubster(s)”] have developed and included a comprehensive image database comprised of current, past, and historic photographs spanning over a century of Brockton history. Since the group's establishment, thousands of current and former citizens have become members.I decided to promote the local atheist group I belong to -- The Brockton MA Area Atheists. I'm from Brockton originally, and the post would communicate ideas.
The Brockton Hub continues to mold, shape, and grow into a stronger, vibrant, more distinctive entity.
Please treat one another with respect and dignity.
So I decided to be as divisive and insulting as possible. Here is what I posted.
Now you can see how inflammatory that is, right?
I'm sure none of you will be surprised what happened next.
What follows are some of my favorite comments from the thread.
I don't want to misrepresent that page or that community. As you can read from the entire (oh, I'm sure there's more being added even as I write) thread below there was an active debate going on between the different sides. My disruptive suggestion that the godless in a metropolitan area want to meet did bring out the archetypal internet types: THE GUY WHO LOVES ALL CAPS guy, the person who doesn't understand Hitler, etc.
Oh, one person did contact me, BTW. I don't know if that person will ever attend a meeting, but for something that took me two minutes to write it was well worth my time.
This is Purgatory.
Here is the thread.
What? You read to the end of the thread? Good for you!
My eyes glazed over, too.
