New Poll: Have You Ever Been Threatened Because You Are An Atheist?

I live in a suburb of Boston, MA. It's not a red state by any means, and I walk around with my Friendly Neighborhood Atheist button I got from the Reason Rally without any problems. Sure, I occasionally get a dirty look, but no one has gotten in my face over the public display of godlessness (PDG).

I understand that many places (most?) do not have such a tolerant attitude towards atheists. Have you ever been threatened because you're one? Were you online when it happened or was it in the "real" world?

The poll is in the upper left column and feel free to place your comments below.

  1. Not really and nothing in my face that I can remember. Certainly called names on the internets though. But I don't get out much either.

  2. I've never been threatened in Australia, or Japan. I have however been threatened by American Christians online.

  3. Only real issue was my fathers. I recall it, back in 1994. We're driving to my grandmothers place and he says "You never believed in God". I said to him "That's right!"

Of course I know about his crisis of faith too. He just chose to submit. I didn't.

  4. While I have never been threatened with any real physical harm, I have quite often been threatened with eternal damnation (oooh, scary!). I'm sure all of us have!

  5. Apart from the threat of eternal damnation, I have been yelled at by the Christian Lobby at my uni after they bailed me up to ask me about my soul. When I asked for evidence I was told I need to have faith...Then the fight started... I never called them names but they called me all sorts. I never raised my voice they raised there's. I did get upset when they told me that my children would burn in Hell with me...

  6. Only online which I don't actually consider a threat.

  7. I work in the Bible-Belt (Kansas). When people find out you don't believe in a god, they either decide that you are going to hell or that they can best you in a fight because they have god on their side. (That sounds like a genie to me.) And I agree, online does NOT count. That's a daily "threat."

  8. Never out rightly threatened, other than the threat of hell, of course. I did have a troll online on Google + tell me I should "choke on some batshit", lol.
He was only a middle school kid, I laughed it off....

  9. I think that once you've realized the reasons you're an atheist, we tend to think less of friends and relatives who do believe. Thus, you don't tend to want to hang around with the people who won't think for themselves. And to think, they look at atheists as weird. It's as if we have some kind of disease and choose to maintain it. Catholics seem to be the worst in my opinion. Especially when you explain all the pedophelia that has gone on and the total abuse of power by the Vatican.

  10. Andy, can ya add a "not really" category. No one has come up to my face and said, "heathen, repent, yadda yadda yadda, our lord is the lord (pick one, anyone), die godless swcumbag such-n-such." although...I have been spammed by the man Dennis Maruz or whatever his name is and if you have ever gone to any of his links...well, then you know. Awesome buddy. your Patriots did well yesterday, but....Go niner's

  11. Instead of threats, I often get a physical "pull-back", usually followed by, "Really? Oh..." Usually followed with a searching look, as if they had missed a tell-tale physical sign somewhere.

  12. I live in Alabama and have been threatened with pyshical harm numerious times. The only reason they don't follow through is because I go armed everywhere. It suprising how a knife showing in your pocket and the hint of more will quiet the bible tumpers down.

  13. My partner and I have the (dubious) pleasure of living next door to a religious cleric of some sort. After a big storm here last year, he proudly announced over the fence that our town was saved by his prayer to god/baby jesus etc. He was a bit pissed that our property was untouched by the storm while his garden shed blown to New Zealand. Being in a same sex couple situation, the religious cleric decided that we are targets worth going for. He and his wife commenced regular deliveries of a christian newspaper so full of silly nonsense that it was good for a laugh. After, jees, hundreds of the things we asked that they stop. That's when the constant "you'll go to hell" stuff started. We do have lively discussions about belief but he's been so completely conned, it's a time waster. Knowing hell is total nonsense makes his threats non-existent, but there are others not prepared for the deluge that may feel concerned at this cleric's sniping. Freedom from religious dogma is such a positive.

  14. Yes, I've been threatened both online and in real life. I'm not counting the frequent threats of hell and eternal damnation but am instead focusing only on threats of physical harm. It has not happened often, but it has happened.
