Christianity Is The Worst Religion Ever

It's been over a week and the votes are in for the Worst Religion. There were a total  of 288 votes and the final results are:

Christianity: 31% (89 votes)
Islam: 62% (179 votes)
Judaism: 4% (12 votes)
Hinduism: 1% (4 votes)
Buddhism: 1% (4 votes)

I rounded off the numbers so the total percentage comes out to 99%.

I wish to defend my claim that Christianity is the Worst Religion. OK, before the hate mail starts I wish to state that currently Islam is much more of a dire threat to freedom and liberty. Currently, most Christians are not burning people at the stake (hmmm... steak) but the faith has a checkered past to say the least. Christianity has been more successful in spreading it's brand of wackiness because it has been hitched to capitalism. Capitalism seems to bring out the best and the worst out of people and here are some quick points to support my claim.

  • Slavery Christianity actively supported the institution of slavery for a long time. On the eve of the American Civil War there were approximately 4 million slaves in country. England abolished slavery with the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. The early French Republic abolished slavery in 1795 but Napoleon re-instituted it in 1802. Even after Napoleon slavery existed in France and her territories until 1848. Let's look at some Christian quotes about slavery.
The Christian church's main justification of the concept of slavery was based on the "curse of Ham" which appears in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) in Genesis 9:25-27.

"Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. He also said, 'Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
Christians at the time believed that Canaan had settled in Africa and that his descendants had become black. (click here for link).
"[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts." Jefferson Davis, President, Confederate States of America (same article as above)
  • Imperialism Christianity happened to take root in Western Europe (if Islam had I suspect most of us reading this would have been brought up Muslim) and was intimately part of Imperialism. The 3 C's of Imperialism were: Commerce, Christianity, and Civilization (click here). Imperialism had a multitude of detrimental effects on the local populations. Here is an  example of what happened in Australia.
It's 1931 in Western Australia. A.O. Neville is the government's official in dealing with aborigine issues. Under the law, he has the right to seize "half-caste" children - those with both aborigine and white parentage - to be housed on native settlements, where they are to be "re-educated" to western ways eventually to become servants for whites. The assertion is that this measure will protect the aborigine population, as if they are left to intermingle within aborigine communities, half-castes will turn the community white as the weaker aborigine gene will be bred out within a few generations (click here for link).
Here is a map depicting how much of the planet the British Empire gobbled up.

  • Christian Condemnation of Learning/Science One of the many ironies of Christianity is that the technological/scientific progress that made it the world's dominant faith was vigorously suppressed by the Church.  From it's earliest days the Church repressed learning. Many Christians want to give the impression that the persecution of Galileo, Darwin/Evolutionary theory, etc. were mere hiccups on their marvelous road show of faith. This is not the fact.

Here is what happened to Hypatia, the Last Librarian of the Library of Alexandria, in 415 AD
Cyril (Bishop of Alexandria) was incensed that Hypatia's reputation and talents were giving the cause of paganism a dangerous prestige, and thereby preventing the 'progress of the Faith'.
Hmmm... what  happen I wonder?
Hypatia was set upon by the mobsters (Christians) as she was going in her carriage from her lecture-hall to her home. She was dragged to a nearby church where mob-rule took control. Stripped, beaten and hacked to pieces her dismembered body was burned to hide all traces of the crime.
I don't want to let the Hindus off the proverbial hook. The caste system on the subcontinent is the embodiment of an authoritarian, religious system of social control (click here for link). One inherits a certain spot in the social hierarchy and that's great if you are the Brahmin (ancestors of the original conquerors of the subcontinent) not so good if you are an Untouchable (the lowest of the menial workers). Caste is a powerful force in rural areas while urban dwellers are less controlled by it. Inter-caste marriages can be awkward and some have been the cause of honor killings (from dishonoring the family by marrying someone "lesser" than you).

  1. Actually, Hypatia was scraped to death with clamshells. Tal es la Vida, entonces usted muere.

  2. Excellent and detailed post. Horrific things have been done in the name of Christianity, but I still think Islam is "the worst", considering the above post reflects history, whilst Islam is still actively promoting oppression of women and in some cases, extremism and "war" on other religions etc. Hence, I believe Islam is "the worst".

    1. "Currently, most Christians are not burning people at the stake"...that is correct, christians don't use stakes anymore...let me remind you of the nuclear fires at Nagasaki and Hiroshima (purposely set with the excuse of peace)...more like evaporation...napalm in Vietnam (burned without a stake even)...radiation burns from spent nuclear bullets used in Iraq and Afghanistan...christians don't use stakes anymore, they just burn people wholesale. If you think more on this, I'm sure you can find more examples of burning people without a stake.

    2. Christianity basically does not practice what it preaches, thusly causing Muslims to justify calling us infidels. Women are not allowed to preach or SAY ANYTHING in a house of the lord. So says Paul the writer of most of the new testament. Women are considered weaker by Christianity. They have roles in the home and even were not educated in institutions in the early days because their lot in life was caretaking of the home and meeting all expectations of the husbands (master). This may sound like Utopia for some, but for a realist, no such thing as weaker sex. Women are nurturing whereas men are destructive. Women have a threshold of pain that is far greater than that of a man. Be honest. How would you like to switch roles and give birth? I believe all religions are dangerous exceptions may be in existence but overall the Judaic god and all major religions that is derived from that god are the most dangerous in the world. Christianity may be the worst as it guises itself in love and compassion, and it takes the higher moral ground, which is dangerous and delusional and deceptive. Any congregant who is told that thinking for oneself is considered evil, and has limited IQ could possibly get hold of some very suggestive (bad) verses and do some real damage all in the name of a god of love.

  4. So to sum up your argument, Christianity is the worst becase nations, secular nations at that, did bad things

  5. @ Cosmo - Today they are secular. Becoming secular nations took centuries.

My argument is that Christianity coupled with capitalism Industrialized activities like Slavery that other societies had but never really developed in such a manner. Chrisitianity supported those activities by and large - highlighting the point that morality is something not derived from religion.

  6. Very informative! I'd be interested in seeing your rank of the religions.

  7. My only problem is that you don't consider the various sects of Christianity. For example, there's a very large difference in the history (and current position) of Catholicism and Lutheranism, even down to the various subsects of each (i.e. Missouri Synod Lutherans, who don't allow women to vote and consider themselves THE church vs. ELCA Lutherans, who just voted to include sexually active gay clergy members and gay marriage into the ELCA church.) I won't say that any sect is perfect (or any religion is for that matter) but I just don't consider it to be fair to lump all Christians together as having the same view points (same with Hindus, Islamics, etc). Granted, you are taking things in the extreme abstract and your poll is highly prone to self-selection, so I'm probably being anal-retentive. But at least I'm not crazy-ass DM up there.

Funny how some dismiss the centuries of havoc wrought by the church by distancing these crimes from true Christianity or God's real intent or something. It was sinners - nations, or corrupt churches, rather than true Christians that committed these crimes. For some there's no getting thru. The faith collapses from the inside out - the belief that God saves people thru a human sacrifice of his son? The same God who commanded the slaughter of infants of enemy nations in the old testament? (The bible teaches slaughtering infants is good as long as God says to do it - how can such a book possibly be appealed to as a moral compass?) God supposedly will condemn billions of people to a hell of worse suffering than was inflicted by Hitler, Stalin, or any other brutal mass murderer. None of them inflict as much suffering as this supposed God on more people for even remotely the same duration - indeed according to Christianity God alone can impose on someone the suffering of hell after the body is destroyed - God will impose more suffering on more people than Hitler. How can such a being possibly be worshipped or called good? (Well, he'll give you a pass if you just take joy in his bloody immolated slaughtered son. He would've slaughtered you spiritually but opted to tear his son apart in your place). It's a hopeless non-starter.

  9. Plucker, ShufflerJune 28, 2010 at 5:43 PM

Oh - concerning one of the least hated religions in the survey, buddhism, it has the occasional good idea. Unfortunately, it's relatively evident that we exist. So much for buddhism.

  10. @ Anonymous about the sects of Christianity.

Yep, I think that will be a future poll!

  11. Here's a Jewish-Buddhist combo a co-worker passed on (I don't have the actual source):

"The Torah says, Love your neighbor as yourself. The Buddha says, There is no self. So, maybe you're off the hook."

  12. you are one stupid fuck. Keep complaining about the past just like Obama, Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives do. I bet you are a liberal atheist soulless asshole... either way you can eat a bowl of hot dicks. Look at the islamic maniacs who blow each other up everyday because they believe in a slightly different version of islam. You don't see baptists, lutherans, christians, protestants, etc blowing each other up. So go back to your empty pointless life you ugly fat douche bag and keep on blogging because you have no friends or romantic interests.

    1. I'm sorry but there is no such thing as a stupid fuck...every fuck I have ever had was really a bowl of hot dicks is really hard to imagine...ugly, fat douche bag sounds a lot like my brother...are you sure we aren't related?

  13. "You don't see baptists, lutherans, christians, protestants, etc blowing each other up."

Not in this century, you don't. You had better thank secularists like our Founding Fathers for the fact that you aren't being killed over a small difference in translation of the bible. It happened, hundreds of years ago.

  14. I find it very funny that someone claims that you have "no friends or romantic interests," yet is probably searching the internet for things like this to try to bash.

  15. Christianity did not replace paganism, it adopted it. ie: the word cross does not appear in the new testament which was originally written in Greek.

    1. Yes, the word "cross" does appear in the New Testament...Jesus walked across the water.
